St. Joseph Parish is adding a new Parish ministry for the young people of the parish. In the fall of 2007 we will be starting a CYO Athletic program for Children in Grads 3 thru 8
The Athletic Program at St. Joseph’s will offer the children of the St. Joseph and OLS Parish the opportunity to compete against other Catholic Parish teams.
Registration Eligibility:
- Child must be a registered student of St. Joseph Parish School or the St. Joseph or Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Religious Education Program.
- Since St. Joseph’s is currently partnering with OLS Parish in South Orange as part the Archdiocese of Newark First Energies Initiative, Union County CYO will allow the Religious Education Students at OLS Parish to play on the St. Joseph Parish team.
Boys and Girls Basketball – Winter
The basketball season is from October to March. The basketball program is open to all student-athletes from grades 3 thru 8. If needed, tryouts will be held in October and then teams will play a competitive schedule against other local Catholic Parishes in Essex and Union counties.
Varsity – Grades 7 & 8: These teams practice 1-2 times during the week at night and play a 12-15 competitive game schedule on weekends. If available playoffs and Tournaments may also be added to the schedule.
JV - Grades 5 & 6: These teams practice 1-2 times during the week at night and play a 12-15 competitive game schedule on weekends. If available playoffs and Tournaments may also be added to the schedule.
Pee Wee - Grades 3-4: Developmental basketball teams for all students in grades 3 and 4. These teams practice 1 day per week and play instructional games on weekends.
Please Note: Depending on the registration numbers the Sports Committee could elect to have an A & B team for various teams. Teams could then be determined by ability or grades
Potential Future Program
Grades 1-2: An instructional basketball clinic could be offered to all boys and girls in 1st and 2nd grades during the winter months. This basketball clinic would be held on Saturday mornings from December through February.
Cheerleading - Winter

Varsity Squad - Grades 7-8
The Varsity Cheerleading Squad will begin practice in late October. The squad will practice between 1 -2 times a week and will perform at the Varsity boys and girls basketball games and may participate in a number of cheerleading competitions against other parishes.
